Partnership manager Robert Hill said: “Road users are at greater risk at this time of year – commuters are more likely to be travelling in the dark and frosty conditions make journeys more difficult. Motorists should avoid unnecessary trips and consider using public transport where possible.
Robert added: “Planning ahead is more important at this time of year. Give yourself more time than usual to complete your journey. Top up your screen wash and be sure to remove all ice from your windows and mirrors before setting off.”
“We’ve put together a journey checklist for people who need to travel when weather conditions are poor.”
Journey checklist:
Check the weather and travel news – get the latest information online or by tuning into your local radio or TV bulletin
Allow more time for your journey
On long journeys, take a shovel, torch, boots, warm clothing, food and a hot drink
Stash a high-visibility tabard in your glove box – wearing one will make you easier to spot if you break down and have to get out of your car
Top up your windscreen washers with water and de-icer
Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressures and have a tread depth of at least 3mm
Check your lights are clean and in working order
Make sure your windows and mirrors are free from snow, frost and ice
Steer gently
Avoid harsh braking and sudden manoeuvres
Use dipped headlights if driving during snowfall
