A scheme offering discounted scooter hire to rural people who struggle to get to work or college now offers improved safety training thanks to Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership.
Wheels 2 Work Derbyshire now enrols customers on CBT Plus - a rider development course devised by the partnership - as well as the basic training that motorcyclists are required to complete by law.
The free CBT Plus training for Wheels 2 Work customers is being funded by Derbyshire County Council, which is one of the partnership’s member organisations.
Andy Adlington, the partnership's motorcycle project officer, worked with local training providers to devise the CBT Plus course. He said: “Bikers are more vulnerable than other motorists – all they've got to protect them is their biking gear and their riding skills.
"CBT Plus teaches Wheels 2 Work customers how to survive the situations they will face while travelling on their scooters. They will learn how to read the road and tackle challenges such as cornering and overtaking with greater confidence."
Wheels 2 Work Derbyshire is managed by the county's rural community council. The scheme is aimed at people aged 16 and over who are having difficulty accessing work, training or educational opportunities due to a lack of transport.
Sandie Abberley from Derbyshire Rural Community Council, said: "The extra training developed by the partnership is really good news for Wheels to Work Derbyshire. We take the safety of our clients very seriously, and the CBT Plus course can help us to do this more effectively".
