Motorways and major A-roads are no place for pedestrians – that’s the message Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership is sending to revellers in the lead up to Christmas.
Partnership chairman Mike Ashworth said: “Every year, we see people taking risks after a night out. They try to walk home along busy dual carriageways such as the A38 and some even take a shortcut by running across the M1.
“This Christmas we’re encouraging people to plan ahead. You won’t be tempted to take risks if you’ve booked a taxi or planned which bus to catch.”
Mike added: “Remember it’s not just busy A-roads and motorways that pose a danger to people who are walking home. Some countryside roads don’t have pavements so they’re not a safe bet for pedestrians either.”
During December, NHS staff will be handing out copies of the partnership’s free safe travel guide to pub-goers across Derbyshire. Partying? Your 5 step guide to getting home safely is designed to fit easily into a wallet or purse so that revellers can use it while they’re out and about.
