Drivers – watch out for bikes!

1 November 2010

Watch out for bikes – that’s the message Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership is sending to drivers in its latest publicity campaign.

Watch out for bikes

The partnership is advertising on the back of buses, on the radio and in newspapers to warn drivers about the dangers of failing to look out for bikes.

Partnership chairman Mike Ashworth said: "In Derbyshire, 40% of bike crashes involve a driver who fails to look properly. Bikes are easy to miss because they are so much narrower than cars. Our advice is to look twice for bikes.

"It gets dark earlier now the clocks have gone back so it’s more important than ever to be aware of bikes.

Mike added: "Bikers can make themselves easier to spot by using choosing riding gear that that is fluorescent during the day and reflective at night. They can also improve their skills through rider training."

High-visibility riding techniques are among the skills that motorcyclists can learn by attending one of the partnership’s cut-price training courses. To find out more about CBT Plus and Bike Plus call 08456 058 058 or visit www.saferroadsderbyshire.org.uk/motorcyclists (opens in a new window)
